    All the Free Campgrounds in Wyoming

    Wyoming is a state found in the Mountain West region of the United States. It is the 10th largest state by area. However, Wyoming is the least densely populated state in the entire country. This state shares borders with six other Mountain and Great Plains states: Colorado to the south, Nebraska and South Dakota to the east, Montana to the north and northwest, Idaho to the west and Utah to the southwest. The capital of Wyoming is Cheyenne, which is located in the southeastern corner of the state. This state’s topography is dominated by the ranges of Rocky Mountains and several large basins that border them.

    Most of the broad basins availabe here are synclines. The lowest point in Wyoming, which is 953 metres, lies in the channel of the Belle Fourche River. This river flows from Wyoming in the state of South Dakota. The highest point in this state is the Gannett Peak (4,207 metres), which is part of the Wind River Range that is located in the western region of the state. The state of Wyoming has plenty to offer when it comes to camping options. There are plenty of free campgrounds you can choose from in this state. Discussed below are some of them.

    Amsden Creek WMA – Amsden Meadows – Parkman, Wyoming

    This is a free dispersed campground located in Parkman, Wyoming. Accessing it can be challenging due to poor conditions of access roads. However, it is a generally very silent campground that can be ideal if you fancy such conditions. This campground doesn’t have water, bathroom, nor electricity connection. Tent camping is the common activity here.

    Amsden Creek WMA – Tongue Canyon – Parkman, Wyoming

    This is a nice campground in Parkman, Wyoming. It doesn’t have a lot of sites but the available ones are among the canyon and beautiful trees. The camping are is basically one road with camp sites on either side. River Tongue is within a short distance from here. There is a short trail near the campground that you can sit by the river and enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. You can also make a fire to help defeat the cold conditions at night. This campground doesn’t have many amenities — only one toilet at the rare end of it. Some of the common activities here including wildlife viewing, tent camping, and hiking.

    Ayres Natural Bridge State Park – Douglas, Wyoming

    This campground is a hidden gem! It is located only a few miles off the highway but it is totally worth it. The campground has a spacious playground that kids can play. Besides, there are several campsites and enough parking space. You can also explore the area for breathtaking scenes. If you love photography, the bridge near this campground is excellent for photos. This campground has access to water and has a few clean toilets. Some of the common activities here include hiking, tent camping, fishing, and swimming.

    Baby Wagon Road Dispersed – Buffalo, Wyoming

    This is a free camping area found along Wagon Road. It is a large camping area given the extent of the road. There are several campsites on either side of the road. Furthermore, there is a black top parking area on the west of end of FSR 422. This area is adjacent to hwy 16. Bike riding is one of the common activities here, with bikers taking advantage of the flat and well-maintained Baby Wagon Road. You can also engage in tent camping and hiking.

    Basin River Access – Basin, Wyoming

    Address: 352 B Street Basin, Wyoming

    This camping area is located in Basin, Wyoming. It is a large campground with several campsites. There is also enough camping space. The maximum number of days you are allowed to camp here is seven. Accessing is generally easy, though the tall tree branches on the entrance drive can be a challenge. Once inside, you will find the space very clean. The campground has picnic tables and several fire rings. As much as there are no hook-ups, you can access a bathroom within 25ft. Some of the common activities practiced at this campground include hiking, boating, swimming, fishing, and tent camping.

    Bear Tooth Lake NFS Campsite – Cody, Wyoming

    This campground is found in Cody, Wyoming. It is a tent-only camping area that is right outside the Bear Tooth Lake campground. It is right next to the boat launch and has a better of the area than the other campground. This campground has no running water, but restrooms are available. You can access this campground for free — there is a donation box to the National Forest Service for maintenance. The campground is sizeable enough and there is enough parking space. Some of the amenities available here include boat ramp, trash cans, restrooms, picnic tables, and fire rings. The common activities at this campground include boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, water sports, and wildlife viewing.

    Beaver Divide – Lander, Wyoming

    This is a free dispersed campground in Lander, Wyoming. It is north of highway 287 and it is about 30km southeast of Lander. It is an easy to access campground that can also be a nice boondocking site. The camping area is generally warm during the day and cool at night. It is only half a mile from the highway 287, meaning you won’t have to navigate challenging road terrains. The campground is large in size and can accommodate several campsites. There is also enough parking space. The maximum number of days you are allowed to camp here is 14. Keep in mind that traveling here on week days can be challenging due to high traffic.

    Bellyache Flats Dispersed – Big Horn County, Wyoming

    This is a free dispersed camping area in Big Horn County, Wyoming. It is found inside the Powder River Ranger District, which is part of the Bighorn National Forest. The campground works on a first-come first-serve basis. Even though this is a small campground, there is enough parking space. This campground has no running water nor restrooms. However, there are a few picnic tables dotted across the camping area. Common activities here include hiking and tent camping.

    Below Meadowlark Lake – Ten Sleep, Wyoming

    This is a nice campground found in Ten Sleep, Wyoming. It is located at the edge of a huge mountain-top meadow with the Creek Mountain through the middle of it. The campground has spacious campsites that are evenly distributed across it. Each campsite has an excellent view of the surrounding mountain peaks and meadows. This campground has no water access. However, it has amenities like picnic tables and grills. The common activities at this campground are hiking and fishing.

    Beumee WHMA – Site 2 – Elk Mountain, Wyoming

    Address: Elk Mountain Arlington Rd, Elk Mountain, WY 82324, USA

    This is a free dispersed campground found in Elk Mountain, Wyoming. It operates on a first-come first-serve basis. The campground is located on a high elevation area and has enough space for parking. There are about five campsites at this campground. It has no water access but it has clean toilets. The a activities here include hiking, tent camping, and wildlife viewing.

    Beumee WHMA – Site 1 – Rock River, Wyoming

    This is a free dispersed campground found in Rock River, Wyoming. It operates on a first-come first-serve basis. This campground is located on a high elevation location and has enough space for parking. The campground has a total of six campsites. Accessing this campground is easy given that it is located close to the main highway. The maximum number of days you can camp here is 14. This campground has access to water and several toilets. The common activities here include hiking, swimming, fishing, boating, and tent camping.

    Big Sandy Dam and Reservoir – Farson, Wyoming

    This camping area is found in Farson, Wyoming. It has no on-site manager nor law enforcement. However, it has several primitive facilities. This campground is not ideal for regular use and personal camping due to security reasons. However, it is a free site for activities like picnicking, primitive camping, boat launching, among others. It also has amenities like water, though the compound is in a bad condition due to lack of on-site management. The camping area sits on around 2,500 acres of land situated in an open setting.

This campground is generally quiet except for the train track nearby. Some of the common activities at this campground include hiking, wildlife viewing and camping. It has no amenities.

    Black Forks River – Robertson, Wyoming

    This is a free dispersed camping area found in Robertson, Wyoming. It operates on a first-come first-serve basis. It has a sizeable space that can accomodate RV parking. You are allowed to camp here for free for a maximum of 14 days. Accessing this camping area is easy thanks to a well-maintained road network. This campground has access to clean water. Some of the common activities at this campground include hiking, boating, swimming, fishing,and tent camping.

    Black Hills National Forest Service Road – Crook County, Wyoming

    This is a free dispersed campsite in Crook County, Wyoming. The camping area is found on the Warren Peak Road. The phone service network here is okay for both messages and calls. The only available amenity at this campground is fire rings. Some of the common activities include hiking and wildlife viewing.

    BLM Camping Outside Fossil Butte NM – Fontenelle, Wyoming

    This camping area is found in Fontenelle, Wyoming. It is just west of Fossil Butte and north of CR300 which is adjacent to the nearby power lines. To access this campground, use the dirt road off CR300. This road can be challenging especially when it rains. Use a four wheel drive vehicle for easier access. This campground has no amenities.

    Boyd Ridge Dispersed – Lovell, Wyoming

    This camping area is found in Lovell, Wyoming. It is located inside the Medicine Wheel Ranger District, which is part of the Bighorn National Forest. This campground doesn’t accept reservations. It is on a high elevation location and is sizeable enough to accomodate RV camping. The maximum number of days you are allowed to camp here is seven. The campground has four campsites with picnic tables. This campground doesn’t have access to water. Some of the common activities at this campground include hiking, tent camping, and wildlife viewing.

    Bridger Valley Parking Lot – Urie, Wyoming

    This is public parking lot found off the US80-Business route. This parking area has no amenities. However, it is generally quiet except for the traffic noise. Security is also reliable. Overnight parking is allowed here.

    Broken Wheel Truck Stop – Douglas, Wyoming

    This is a rest area found in Douglas, Wyoming. Like the name suggests, it is mostly used by truck drivers as a rest area. It is generally very quiet. This area can be an excellent place to stay.     Brooks Lake – Dubois, Wyoming

    Brown Mountain Campground – Meeteetse, Wyoming

    Brush Creek Dispersed Campsite – Saratoga, Wyoming

    This is a free dispersed campground in Saratoga, Wyoming. This camping area is just above the Bruth Creek Forest Service campsite. It is sizeable in size and has enough parking space. Some of the common activities include hiking and tent camping. This campground has no amenities. The access roads are in bad shape and might be challenging for you especially when it rains. That is why using a four wheel drive vehicle will make things better.

    Bud Love Wildlife Habitat Management Area – Buffalo, Wyoming

    This camping location is found in Buffalo, Wyoming. This is a restricted area and camping is only allowed within one hundred yards of the main entrance. The parking lot is sizeable and can accomodate different types of vehicles. Accessing this spot is easy, thanks to a well-maintained road network.
