    The History of Cincinnati

The city of Cincinnati was founded in 1789 by Colonel Robert, Mathias Denman, and Israel Ludlow. The three landed at a spot near the northern bank of Ohio and decided to settle. John Filson, a surveyor, had originally named it Losantiville. However, on January 4, 1790, the city was renamed Cincinnati by St. Clair in honor of the Society of Cincinnati. The city’s strategic location on the borderline between the slave state of Kentucky and Ohio made it an ideal location for enslaved people to escape the slave trade in the south. At that time, many popular abolitionists relocated to Cincinnati and settled there. This made it a renowned stopover on the underground railroad.

In the 1920s, the city’s early rejuvenation began and continued into the 1940s.
